Intro Music Clip: Welcome to Miami by Will Smith Minutes: 20 seconds

Intro: Only the Beginning Minutes: 2 minutes and 20 seconds

Hi Everybody! This is Bhumi and welcome to my show, How to Earn a Grand a Year. Today we will be speaking to Dalia Osiem, who is a pharmacist and works at CVS pharmacy. Born in Lebanon, she moved here with her family right after graduating high school. Within a few months, she got accepted to Wayne State University. Dalia, please tell us about your experience through under-graduate school?
“Well, it was definitely a new experience. I went in with a open mind and within no time, was able to adjust with the life style of a typical college student. I wanted to become a doctor, until my second year of college where I realized how much I hate working with blood. I turned to pharmacy because my parents would not accept me in any other field except medical.”
Man, your parents really want that money! Just joking, it’s good that your parents had high hopes for you. I see people all the time stressing over getting into graduate school, how did you prepare yourself to get into Pharmacy School?
“While other Masters programs require a bachelor’s degree before entering, pharmacy school is different. You do not need a degree to be accepted. I talked to many pharmacists that gave me great advice on what I should do, and what not to do. They told me to get all my requirements done as soon as possible, and study really hard for the PCATs. There are only about 50 credits that Pharmacy schools look at. These are mostly the difficult math and science classes, so you have to make sure you study really hard to do good in those classes. They said not to waste any time, and make sure I am involved in many clubs, and do a lot of volunteer work. There are about Back when I entered Pharmacy School in 2001, the competition to enter was not even close to how it is now-a-days.”

Segment: Never Ending Amounts of Exams Minutes: 1 minute

So I’m sure it’s no walk in the park to get a career where you earn $80,000 starting. Tell me about how many exams you had to take to get to where you are today.
“Of course the first was the PCATs. To my opinion, this was the hardest exam to this day. The reason for that is because of the high amounts of stress that comes with the PCATs. Your PCAT score determines if you are qualified enough to become a pharmacist or not. With getting a high PCAT score, you gain confidence that you are good enough to be what you dreamed of becoming. After my 4 years Pharmacy school there are some minor exams that are needed to take place, before rotations begin, and after. The last final exam is the State Board Exam. This one is needed to qualify to work in the state where you take the exam. This exam has to be re-taken every couple of years, depending on what state you work in.”

End Segment Music Clip: I Get Money by 50 Cent Minutes: 20 seconds

End Segment: Any Regrets? Minutes: 1 minute

It seems like there’s a lot of schooling involved before you begin earning money. Was it worth all the stress and restless nights?
“Absolutely! Not to be greedy, but the money you make with being a pharmacist is wonderful. Anyone that survives through 7 years of schooling, countless amounts of standardized tests, and restless weekends, deserves every penny they make. Also the need of Pharmacists will also be high, so it is a good profession to go into.”
What is the best advice you can give a person who wants to become a Pharmacist?
“The best advice I could give anyone is to make sure they enjoy working with customers and always being on your feet. You have to love what you do, or else you will be miserable, and no matter how much money you make, it will never be worth it.”
Thank you so much for coming to speak with us today, Dalia. You’ve been a great guest, and please recommend anyone you know who has an interesting job that makes a grand or more! Thanks listeners, we’ll see you next week!

Stop the Deforestation!

People stress that we should recycle paper, so we can save more trees; but what about the trees getting cut down for beef? Thousands and thousands of trees are being cut down in the forests in Brazil for more land to raise cattle for beef. Cattle require a lot of land to grow properly to allow manufacturers to create the optimum type of beef. This beef is then sold to large companies like McDonalds in bulk and sold at their restaurants at a low price. People worry that we are wasting too much paper and cutting down too many trees for paper. They do not realize that every time they go to a fast food restaurant to buy a $1.49 double cheeseburger, they are supporting the deforestation in the Amazon Forest.
People may ask, why does Brazil allow deforestation of their Amazon forest? There is a high correlation with the amount of deforestation and the growth of the economy. The government has yet to learn about the severe damage they are causing to not only themselves, but the whole world. According to an article by Butler called Deforestation in the Amazon, the Brazilian Government use their tax money to grow grass from Africa for the cattle to graze on. Sixty to seventy percent of the Amazon Forest is being cut down for land for cattle to grow. Most of the rest is used by farmers that use this land because of its low tax rate. The land is also very fertilized and perfect for growing all sorts of plants that these farmers can export in bulk to other countries. This may be a good cause to those farmers who cannot afford their own land, but it is causing severe damage as previously stated.
For more research on cattle and the environment, I went my local Hindu Temple, in Canton, Michigan, where I recently heard a lecture on the benefits of being a vegetarian. I had a chance to go over details and have conversations with the local priest who taught me in detail the reason behind why we think cows are so sacred. We have learned that we should not only worship the Gods in heaven, but also our work. Most of the Hindu’s rely on cows for their household income. They are important in every family, because of the work cows do and also for the milk they supply. In India, cows are fed richer foods than the people. Whereas in Brazil, the cattle are fed corn and other vegetables to grow quicker, other than the cattle eating only grass and growing at their own pace. Cattle that are fed corn are found to have pesticides in their body and growth hormones. This affects the type of milk the cows can produce, and also the health of the cow. The cattle are then turned into beef that people eat. If they are not at their optimum health, there is a better risk of bacteria and viruses to be in the cow that can potentially spread to the people.
Growing cattle is causing environment damage as well. We have learned that one reason the ozone layer is becoming thin is that cows release methane gas often which damages the ozone layer. Global warming is affecting everyone all around the world. Many people have changed their lifestyles in certain aspects to help prevent global warming. When cutting down the rain forest, we are decreasing the amount of oxygen gas in the air. Since many countries are becoming more industrialized, they are cutting down great amounts of green to build buildings. People rely on the rain forest for oxygen gas, but when we cut the rain forest down, we are causing problems for the future generations to have a sufficient amount of oxygen gas. Having an excess of cattle is harming our environment more than it’s helping us.
Cattle raising is not wrong; everyone will always need milk to survive. When it comes to the need of cutting down large amounts of forests to have enough land, it becomes an issue. These forests are important especially with the high amounts of trees being cut for more commercial land, and for other necessary products. Our environment is in critical condition with the problem of global warming. When some of us are trying to fix and control these conditions, others are making matters worse. We need to realize that our behaviors and choices today affect the decisions of others down the road. Be wise, and help save the rainforest!

Parabens
People do no often realize how many harmful chemicals there are in products that people use on a daily basis without thinking so. Chemicals can be found in soaps, hair products, bottled water, and cosmetic products. The biggest reason to put these harmful chemicals in products is for preservatives. I feel like most companies are more worried about how many products of theirs are sold, than people’s health. Cosmetic products are used by most women on a daily basis. Teenagers care about their appearance a great amount, and wear all sorts of different products to either cover up blemishes in the skin, or show off their eye color. Paraben is a chemical found in 90% of all cosmetic products. It is a type of preservative that can also be found in shampoos. Before, parabens were placed in toothpaste to inhibit bacterial growth. I feel like girls should start wearing cosmetic products that do not include parabens, because chemicals like that should not be placed on the skin that has a 40% chance of getting into the blood.
Our body misinterprets parabens as estrogen. It is a much weaker mimicker that binds to the cellular estrogen receptor. This causes miscommunication in the endocrine system and can causes severe problems like depression or cancer. Researchers found in 2004 that in 18 out of 20 tumors found for breast cancer had parabens in them. Urine samples of these people who were experimented also showed parabens. This increase of estrogen can cause a decrease in testosterone level. This is harmful for males, due to the lower sperm count in their reproductive system.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is a government agency that’s mission is to protect human health and the environment. The EPA is concerned with the amount of paraben usage in different products, especially cosmetics. They are worried that these chemicals can be easily ingested into the body through the pores on our skin, and be in direct contact with our blood. It is known that anything that is soaked through the skin has a 10 times more concentration than anything taken orally.
A common cosmetic product used by mostly every person is lotion. 60% of all lotions contain some type of paraben. This is harmful because people rub the lotions into the skin, giving parabens an easier access to our body. Parabens are very common lotions because they tend to be used for a long period of time. A tube of lotion could easily last a family a whole year. Preservatives are needed in the lotion to keep it from going bad, and keep the nutrition’s still in the lotion.
Companies producing cosmetic products do not realize the harmful chemicals they are placing in their products. Some companies are now learning new ways to make these products more organic and better for the body. Examples of these companies are Sephora, Clinique, and Bare Minerals. These companies have researched and learned new ways to add preservatives and have the same lasting effect. If we begin to use these products, we can reduce our chances of getting breast cancer, or any other disease.

Advocate Project

I am advocating against the usage of Paraben's in cosmetic products. Women who use cosmetic products on a daily basis do not realize how many dangerous toxins are in those products that can cause life-threatening diseases. Paraben is a type of preservative that is found in 90% of all cosmetic products. Research shows that Paraben's can be known as endocrine disruptors. This means that they can mess up your internal glands, that are responsible for many tasks to keep the body running perfectly. They can also increase the chance of getting breast cancer and male fertility. My audience is teen girls, and women in their 20's and 30's, mostly. I would like them to be aware of what chemicals are put into these cosmetic products, that people may think to be harmless. These products are applied directly onto the skin, and can easily get into the body through the pores on our face. Luckily, there are many companies now that make products that do not have these toxins in them. I will be making a PowerPoint presentation for my project to show pictures, along with facts, to interest all people and help them understand and change for their well being.

My Screenshot!

When I took a screenshot of my desktop, I noticed everything that was going on while I was trying to write a composition, which is writing an email about my schedule to my friend who I haven’t been able to see in 6 months because our schedules do not match up. I saw everything that I have to do right when on the computer to start to do anything productive. I have to check to see any updates that are on Facebook, and see if any of my friends are on AIM Instant Messenger. I have found out from my screenshot, that there are so many distractions now on the computer that delay the time it takes us to finish the work that we need to do. When doing online compositions, you have everything at your fingertips. The Internet allows people to use the thesaurus, and dictionary to improve their compositions. I feel like this makes the composition become less natural, because of everything you can use to improve your writing. The computer offers so many things for us, such as different software’s, and the Internet, it has become much easier for people to complete their work.
